RKL Alumni Connection spoke with Dan Garner. Read on to find out why Dan’s time at RKL made a significant impact not just on his career but also his personal life.
Q: What’s the latest with you?
A: “I’ve been the Chief Financial Officer at the Lancaster County Club for over 15 years now. Before that, I spent nine years working for a car dealership in New Holland, which was my first job after RKL. When I was interviewing for the LCC position, RKL was helping them conduct the search so my connection gave me a leg up in the process. That’s one of the reasons I thought the Alumni Connection was such a great idea when RKL was launching it. I immediately thought it would be great for those looking to make a career change and letting others know that they are actively looking. I’m very happy in my current role, but it is nice to know this network of talented candidates and new opportunities exists for RKL alums.”
Q: What are some significant lessons learned or perspectives gained during your RKL tenure?
A: “I think a lot of the mentors I had during my time at RKL really set good examples. My supervisors taught me about the industry and also how to conduct yourself in business and consider your future, both in business and in personal affairs. I’m thankful I had people that cared so much about their subordinates.
Public accounting isn’t for everyone, but I would encourage any accounting major getting ready to enter a career search to start by going into public accounting because it is such a great learning experience and a launching pad to bigger and better things – whether it is a partnership at a CPA firm or a position in private industry. RKL supported me in finding my own career path. When I left RKL to join the car dealership, it was because of supportive mentors like Bob Simons – they helped me find my own path even if that mean leaving the firm and going into private industry.”
Q: What makes RKL a great place to work?
A: “Coming out of college, it was the perfect first job. I learned a lot of not only business lessons but also life lessons, like working hard and being honest in everything that you do. And of course the work-hard, play-hard mentality. We were always active and engaged with the community and each other. Specifically though, I met my wife, who I’ve been married to for 26 years now!”
